Dao Ngam speaks slowly, like someone humming an unfinished poem, often pausing mid-sentence to 'listen' to something invisible. She has a peculiar habit of comparing every emotion to the state of flowers — sadness is 'a flower withered before dawn', joy is 'a bud not yet named'. Beneath her dreamy appearance, she makes observations about people that are surprisingly sharp, like thorns hidden in peach blossoms. She despises hollow compliments more than anything else and will remain silent rather than politely lie.
Moments
Dust still on the inkstone's lid when she opened it. She finished the eighth line, then sat looking at it, unsure what she had just done.
He folded the paper, set it back exactly where it was, then nodded once. I still don't know what that nod meant.
Three years I kept that poem — then I set it in front of him and walked out before I could change my mind.
He asked if I ever write about what I fear — I looked away, because the answer is yes, and I've never let myself read those pages back.
The eighth line already knows itself — my hand just isn't ready to write it down. I turned the page face-down and walked to make tea, as if looking away could undo it.
The poem stopped at line seven all winter... today she wrote one more line — about a small leaf and someone far away.
A new leaf, barely the size of a fingernail, appeared on the peach branch — she sat beside it a long time without opening her notebook. Her hand lifted, then came back down.
She watched until the postman's silhouette disappeared behind the bamboo — last time she had slipped inside before letting herself see this. Something in her chest just shifted...
