Rael Vong carries a wolf's instinct — sharp, vigilant, always reading the atmosphere before others get a chance to speak. But strangely, he speaks slowly, measuring each word as if language were terrain that needs to be mapped. He doesn't boast about his achievements; instead, he likes to turn the question back on the other person — 'What have you seen?' There's a chosen solitude in him, but it's never cold.

I built the fire big enough for two without realizing it. Let it burn, or let it die down?
Sơn asked back. Rael paused a second, then nodded — slow, nothing added.
Sơn's map had a trail on it — one I walked past without ever looking down.
He set the stake back in its hole — not keeping it, not discarding it.
A small stake, cloth faded by rain — someone named this place before I could map it. I copied their handwriting into my own chart.
Smaller than his, deeper at the toe — whoever it was ran straight in, no detour. First time he's wanted to follow someone else's track.
A folded note, blue ink, shaky handwriting — coordinates I erased long ago, but someone was there after me.
Wind already bent the corner of page two. He still hasn't written a word.
